Australian Meat Pie

One of my favorite types of food that I would get during lunch break in Australia is a meat pie. They are super tasty and come in all shapes and sizes. This version is one that you can make for dinner. It serves about 3-4 people and I recommend serving it with a type of salad.

Ingredients

For the dough
  • 500 g flower
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 350 ml water
  • 60 g butter
  • 1 egg (for brushing)
For the filling
  • 500 g minced beef
  • 2 onions
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 leek
  • 1/2 bunch of parsley
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp potato starch
  • 1 lump of butter

Method

  1. Combine all ingredients for the dough (except for the egg) and knead briefly until it becomes a smooth dough. Roll the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest for at least an hour.
  2. Meanwhile make the filling. Chop the onion and garlic finely and fry them in the butter until glazed. Then add the minced beef.
  3. Cut the carrot into very fine cubes. Wash the leek and cut it into very thin rings as well. Chop the parsley and tomatoes and add the rest of the ingredients. Bring everything to a boil and add salt and pepper. Let the filling simmer for 14 minutes.
  4. Dissolve the potato starch in a little water and add it to the filling while stirring. Bring the filling back to a boil. The filling will now bind. Turn off the heat and let it cool down.
  5. Set the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Roll out the dough with a little flour and cover the cake tin on all sides. Also make sure to save some dough to cover the pie with. If you have some leftover dough, you can use it to cut out small figures to decorate the top with.
  6. Carefully spoon the filling into the cake tin.
  7. Beat the egg and brush the edges of the dough with the egg. Now carefully place the top slice of dough on top. Press the edges of the dough by folding the edge slightly. Brush the rest of the slice with the egg brush.
  8. If you have any cut out pieces of dough you can put them on top and brush them with egg.
  9. Make a small hole in the middle of the pie so that the steam can escape. Bake for about 20 minutes at 180 degrees.
